Senior Scientist, Research Scientist III

Primary Job description

Leads projects. Provides technical review, direction, and feedback to others. Conducts advanced research.

Core Job Responsibilities

Design and conduct routine to complex experimental procedures within the overall scope of a research project and/or diagnostic test development project. Displays strong technical knowledge and expertise in molecular biology methods such as DNA/ RNA extractions, PCR, qRT-PCR, and sequencing. Experience with NGS and basic bioinformatics tools for NGS analysis is highly preferred.

Responsible for designing and troubleshooting experiments. Providing technical expertise and problem-solving. Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system. Designs and conducts experiments, accomplishes established milestones and summarizes data, interprets results, and draws conclusions. Recommends options for future experiments. Presents scientific data in internal and external meetings. Supervises or coaches lower-level scientists. Provides consultation to others on technical issues. Conducts meetings with external collaborators and clients. Prepares and present scientific reports and posters. Able to multitask and maintain several projects at one time.

Lab Safety

Participates in lab safety.

Documentation

Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines.

Position Accountability / Scope

Contributes to project plan. Responsible for project completion.

Research Scientist I

Primary Job description

The Research Scientist I, independently conducts bench scientific experimentation to
develop, verify and validate new diagnostic products using NGS, PCR, and qPCR technology
for implementation in CAP/CLIA laboratories. This position also involves participation in
scientific collaboration with sponsors for new technology/product development.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in brainstorming and contributes novel ideas for new products.
  • Executes experiments to demonstrate early feasibility data for new products.
  • Analyzes raw data, reports results and plans the next steps.
  • Collaborates closely with internal & external bioinformatics and product development teams.
  • Applies extensive scientific knowledge with broad laboratory skills to execute complex bench experiments using variety of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemical and general laboratory techniques as directed.
  • Plans experimental details required for execution of assigned work, with little oversight.
  • Organizes and manages moderately complex projects.
  • Utilizes mathematical, graphical, imaging, nucleic acid analysis and other software aids as needed.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental work.
  • Prepares technical reports for internal use and to share with collaborators; creates protocols or manuals for distribution with internal and external teams.
  • Interacts with and assists other members of the R&D team as needed to meet research objectives.
  • Oversees activities and assists with training of more junior research personnel as directed.
  • Interacts frequently with other internal departments and ResearchDx customers to help manage collaborative research projects as directed.
  • Presents experimental results, data analysis at group meetings as directed.

Qualifications: Education:

  • PhD degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with 0-2 years of relevant lab experience.

Professional Experience:

  • Experience with PCR required.
  • Proficiency in designing primers for multiplex PCR using manual/software methods
  • Experience with NGS (specifically with Illumina sequencing) preferred.
  • Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel required.
  • Experience with basic bioinformatics tools for NGS analysis highly preferred.
  • Previous experience with publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals preferred.

Other Job Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with computational and lab scientists.
  • Ability to draw upon a “molecular biology toolkit” (e.g., polymerases, nucleotide analogs, etc.) to create novel new NGS methods.
  • Ability to train others in basic laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain several projects at one time.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for the direction, control or planning of an activity.
